Climate Rights Charters are tools that allow the mobilization and engagement of territories, in which traditional knowledge meets climate science, to present to society the priority demands of their communities for climate adaptation and mitigation measures. These measures are determined by the residents themselves, through the exchange of experiences and identification of the impacts already felt and in the search for the defense of their rights and climate justice. The charter, then, becomes an instrument for residents to become protagonists in leveraging solutions, occupying strategic spaces for speech and decision-making.
This method was created by The Climate Reality Project Brazil and systematized after the first letter was written in the Maré Complex in Rio de Janeiro. The letters are always written in partnership with organizations in the territories. Any organization that wants to build a Climate Rights Charter in its territory can access our methodology free of charge. In 2023, the course "Building Climate Rights Charters" was launched to further democratize access to this methodology.
